01

Corn and wheat

Corn and wheat supply fermentable starch and are the principal conventional feedstocks used in Canada. Their relative use reflects regional crop supply and facility design.

02

Cellulosic and waste pathways

Crop residues, woody biomass and some waste streams contain carbohydrates that can be converted through more complex pretreatment and hydrolysis. Technical potential should be separated from demonstrated commercial scale.

03

Land and crop context

A credible feedstock discussion includes yield, inputs, soil and land-use boundaries, transport and alternative uses. It avoids declaring an entire crop good or bad based on one undated average.
